Today I’m in love…

… with 4 hop-scotching kids

… with the idea of a romantic getaway with my hubby (sometimes all you need is the idea to get you through)

… with so many good books

… with days where it doesn’t much matter what gets done or what happens, but that we’re happy

… with fresh, sweet air that makes you close your eyes and take a deep breath

What are you in love with today?

I’ve been out-of-sorts lately.  Nothing creative going on, too many thoughts in my head & not able to unscramble them to put neatly down on paper (or WordPress).  Too much tragedy & heartache in the world, too much extended family drama.  Not enough time spent praying, holding children, being quiet.

Me being out-of-sorts means my family being out-of-sorts, too.  Kids know when Mama isn’t at her best & Daddy really knows when Mama isn’t at her best (but it helps he is there to pick up the pieces).  Children are definitely resilient, but they are so keenly aware of what is, isn’t & what should be.

The one good thing about me being out-of-sorts means I’ve been reading, a lot.  My four in the last week – Black Heels to Tractor Wheels (The Pioneer Woman’s love story) by Ree Drummond; Ina May Gaskin’s Guide to Childbirth by Ina May Gaskin (#1 book every woman should read); Heat Wave by Richard Castle (it’s like an episode of Castle — my all-time favorite show, 2nd to Firefly — in book form – squee!); and The Birth Partner by Penny Simkin.  The weather here has been lovely & while the kids run & play, I’ve been reading in the sun.   Four books in one week is a lot for me because I don’t read after my hubby gets home from work, so my reading is usually done while baby is napping.

Other than reading, I’ve been doing some hoping, thinking, daydreaming and oh, feeding children.

Today I’m in love with …

… my just-turned-3-year-old-daughter who is an amazing actress.

… her dad who loves her, and the rest of his children with more love & devotion I have ever seen.

… her big sister, who made sure she had a great birthday.

… her big brother, who wrapped up some of his own cars and gave them to her to open.  “Her favorite of my cars,” he said.

… her baby sister, who chortled and clapped every time we sang “happy birthday.”

Hiatus

So I didn’t mean to take a two-week blogging break.  Sometimes life just happens — it can’t be controlled.   Things have been busy  and I haven’t necessarily been able to write my thoughts out.   To recap the last few weeks:

We finished the drywalling in the living room – Hubby primed and painted – my mom made curtains -  a few things have been hung back into place.  All in all, I love it.  The room is cheerful and bright.  It feels more like a home then it did before — which is the most important thing.

Hubby put in for another position at work.   It’s not a position he was super thrilled about, but it’s a leadership position and it pays more.  Haven’t heard anything about it yet.

My girls and I were sick for about a week.  We were downing a lot of elderberry syrup and watching a lot of Netflix.  (Firefly – yes again - for me, Wonder Pets and some other such nonsense for them.)

My parents came down on Saturday and are still currently here.  We celebrated our daughter’s 3rd birthday yesterday.  She is such an incredible kid — she’s got such a personality.  The night before her birthday, she cried for about 2 hours because she was so sad that she would be 3, not 2, and she wouldn’t be my baby anymore and she was just having a hard time turning 3 (her words) and she was sad when I sang her “happy birthday.”  Suffice it to say, she was over it by the next morning and had a great day, frolicking at the beach and eating cake.

That’s a little recap of what’s happening here — hopefully I’ll be back on track and will be posting more frequently.

It seems like our family is always in the midst of a transition – a  new move, new job, new kid, new project to tackle, etc.  We moved into this house 9 months ago and we are still trying to figure out where things should go, what color we should paint a room.  The house we moved from had bedrooms that were at least 20×20.  With walk-in closets.  And a separate laundry room with built-ins all along one wall.  Here we have 10×12 (maybe!) bedrooms, 1 walk-in closet and a nook in a hallway for the washer and dryer.  Although this house is definitely big enough for us, sometimes it feels very tight in here with four kids and all of the stuff.  My husband and I are purgers by nature and we frequently go through boxes, closets, etc and get rid of a lot of stuff.  When we clean out the kids’ areas, we try to cut the toys by half to encourage happier, less chaotic play.  But somehow there ends up being more and more, all piled on top of each other, and it starts getting harder to breathe in here.  To top it off, right now we’re in the middle of prepping our living room space to paint it.  So everything that was once in here is now scattered throughout the house, making for a crazy Mama who likes things relatively organized!  My hope is that in just a few months we will have purchased more storage to contain the craziness – another bookshelf, baskets for toys, another dresser for the mounds of froofiness that abound with three little girls.

How do you handle your organization?  If you have kids, do you have an organization system for their toys/books?
